INCI Name: Glyceryl Stearate (and) PEG-100 Stearate

CAS Number: 123-94-4 (and) 9004-99-3

Description

Glyceryl stearate (and) PEG-100 stearate is an acid-stable, self-emulsifying O/W emulsifier. It is a reliable workhorse for creams and lotions rich in non-polar oils and waxes.

Being non-ionic, it tolerates acidic actives and electrolytes, and it gives emulsions good heat and freeze stability. It also works as a wetting agent for antiperspirant salts and as an opacifier in clear cleansers.

Key Properties

  • Self-emulsifying, acid-stable

Formulation Guide
  • A typical usage concentration of 2 – 10% is recommended. In general, no co-emulsifiers are needed to obtain stable emulsions.
  • It should be used in combination with consistency agents such as Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, or Cetearyl Alcohol for the formation of viscosity-enhancing liquid crystalline structures in the external water phase.
  • Depending on the formulation 0.1 - 0.3% of Carbomer is necessary to improve the freeze
    stability of the emulsions.
  • It forms stable emulsions with all common oils and fats used for cosmetic skin care products, including polar oils. Emulsions show good application and stability properties if they contain 15 – 30% of the oil phase.
  • Emulsions can be pH adjusted to between 4.5
    and 9.0.
