Description

Curcylic™ 40 is a water-soluble salicylic acid complex containing 40% salicylic acid (BHA). Ordinary salicylic acid barely dissolves in water, so formulators usually need alcohol or glycols to get it into a product. Curcylic™ 40 dissolves straight into the water phase, giving clear, stable formulations that are well tolerated on skin.

As a keratolytic exfoliant, salicylic acid helps loosen dead skin cells, leaving skin looking smoother and pores looking clearer. It is a popular choice for exfoliating toners, cleansers and scalp care.

How to Use

  • Add to the water phase
  • 1% Curcylic™ 40 delivers 0.4% salicylic acid – for example, 5% gives 2% salicylic acid
  • Check and adjust the final pH of your formulation

Regulatory Notes

Under UK and EU cosmetics rules, salicylic acid is limited to 3.0% in rinse-off hair products and 2.0% in most other products, with lower limits for some product types. It must not be used in products for children under 3, except shampoos. Products claiming to treat acne or other skin conditions are regulated as medicines.

Formulation Guide

Recommended Use Level: 0.5-40% of Salicylic Acid*

Incorporation of Curcylic™ 40 in formulations:

• Oil-in-water emulsions : After the two phases have been combined and the emulsion has formed, cool the batch to 40°C - 45°C. Slowly mix in the Curcylic™ 40 with propeller agitation and continue cooling and mixing.

• Gel based formulations: After polymer dispersion at 75°C - 85°C, add desired ingredients, then add neutralizer if required: KOH or NaOH. When batch reaches 45°C, add Curcylic™ 40 with mixing and cool to 25°C.

• Note: Curcylic™ 40 is a medium yellow liquid, therefore gel formulations will have a pale yellow tint.

• Cold process formulations: Is easily used in cold processing of formulations where no heat is needed
