INCI Name: Glycol Distearate
Description
Cutina® AGS from BASF is glycol distearate (EGDS) in flake form. It is the classic pearlising and opacifying agent for rinse-off cleansers: melted into a hot surfactant base, it crystallises on cooling into fine platelets that give a rich, silky pearl effect. It also adds some body and opacity to creams and lotions.
Key Properties
- Strong, brilliant pearl effect in surfactant systems
- Opacifies clear bases
- Adds body to shampoos, shower gels and emulsions
- Easy-to-handle flakes
Applications
- Shampoos and shower gels
- Liquid soaps and face washes
- Bubble baths
- Creams and lotions (as an opacifier and consistency agent)
How to Use
- Typical use level 1–2% for pearl; lower levels give opacity
- Melt into the hot surfactant phase at around 70–75°C, then cool slowly with gentle stirring so the pearl crystals can form
- For a cold-process alternative, try our Pearlising Liquid
